How to Slate Songs and Monologues

The following slate formats are industry standard and are welcomed at MOST schools. Please DOUBLE CHECK the specific requirements for each of your schools (especially before filming prescreens). There are certain programs that DO specify an alternative format for slating!

To slate your songs, use the following format:

"Hello! My name is Eva Noblezada, and I will be singing "NAME OF SONG" from "NAME OF SHOW/WORK" by "NAME OF COMPOSER."

In situations where you have Golden Age songs, it's best to say Rodgers and Hammerstein, or Lerner and Loewe.

You may or may NOT get to sing another song for your audition, so check your school audition requirements so you know. If you are in doubt, only slate ONE song. If you KNOW you will sing two, then announce two!

To slate your monologues, use the following format:

"Hello! My name is Andrew Garfield and this is "NAME OF PLAY" by "NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT." You do not need to say the character's name for Contemporary Monologues.

If performing two monologues introduce both at the beginning. So:

"Hello! My name is Andrew Garfield and this is "NAME OF PLAY" by "NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT" followed by “NAME OF PLAY” by “NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT

If you are performing a Classical monologue (Shakespeare or Greek), use the following format:

"This is “NAME OF CHARACTER” from “NAME OF PLAY." You DON’T need to say the name of the playwright as Shakespeare’s pieces are universally known.

If you are performing a Classical monologue (Non-Shakespeare or Non-Greek), use the following format:.

“This is “NAME OF CHARACTER” from “NAME OF PLAY" by “NAME OF PLAYWRIGHT.” Please DO say the name of the playwright for any Classical playwright besides Shakespeare.
